Frequently asked questions
Please post a question in the comments if you'd like to ask me something that isn't listed here!
What do you eat?
It depends how many services I come across. I normally carry half a pannier of food like ramen (which I eat uncooked), tortillas, cheese sticks, apple sauce, nutella, granola, granola bars, fruit bars, nuts, dried fruit.
If I went through a town, I liked to stop at a grocery store to load up on fruit, my favorites being blueberries and grapes, and dependent on what was good there. In Michigan pears were good and in Oregon and California, nectarines. In towns, I also liked to get normal food from a grocery store like a muffin and milk or a sandwich. I have to admit I did stoop to the level of McDonalds a few times when I was especially hungry.
Are you afraid?
I'm afraid of ticks and bad weather.
Are you alone?
Yes, I was alone.
Where do you sleep at night?
I camped most nights, and sometimes had a host from www.warmshowers.org . These were all fantastic, and I loved meeting warmshowers hosts.
Are your parents worried?
Yes.
How old are you?
20
What do you do in your free time?
I didn't have much free time, but when I did have time to kill, I would clean out my panniers or talk to people or write in my journal.
How much gear do you carry?
Fully loaded with 5 water bottles and food, my bike and gear weighed 70 pounds.
How do you plan your route?
I used Adventure Cycling maps, which give you step-by-step directions and tell you where services and campgrounds are.
What do you think about while you're riding?
Sometimes I listen to music or audiobooks, and I often think about the people I've met or recent memorable falls. I think about the places I go through and how pretty they are, and how much I hate cars that come too close and roads without a shoulder. There's a lot of thinking time, so pretty much everything that could go through one's head, went through mine.
