A Briefing
Ok, getting back on track, here's a summary and pictures from the period of time I missed...
Major events:
Wildlife: Eastern Newts, deer, well fed rattlesnake, baby rattlesnake, lots of black snakes, chipmunks, squirrels, raccoon, loads of different birds, frogs, horrible gypsy moth caterpillars that poop on everything so much it's like rain
Thursday, June 11
Weather: sunny and nice
Miles travelled: 15.5
Total miles on AT: 1293.4
We stopped early at a church hostel for a hot dog dinner which turned out to be an awesome potluck dinner with all the congregation, and they sat with us and we all ate and chatted. There were 30 hikers there, a huge gathering!
Friday, June 12
Weather: sunny and nice, afternoon rain
Miles travelled: 17.8
Total miles on AT: 1311.2
Crossed into NJ from PA (thank goodness, "pain-sylvannia" was awful!), had a great day with South Pole and Wookie. Wild blueberries, reading, a lethargic rattlesnake, swimming in a pond, lunch on a fire tower. We were scared by the rain into setting up camp early, but it was a fluke and stopped raining after half an hour.
Saturday, June 13
Weather: sunny and nice
Miles travelled: 10.6
Total miles on AT: 1321.8
We walked in the morning and met South Pole's husband's cousin, who took us back to his house an hour away, where we spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning our gear and hanging out and eating awesome Brazilian food. It was fun.
Sunday, June 14
Weather: sunny and nice, evening rain
Miles travelled: 8.8
Total miles on AT: 1330.6
We got back on the trail in the afternoon and rain convinced us to set up early in a shelter with a section hiker, Breakfast of Champions, on his last day. I was happy to have a night out of the rain and keep my tent dry another night.
Monday, June 15
Weather: rainy, partly sunny
Miles travelled: 12.6
Total miles on AT: 1343.2
The threat of a thunderstorm scared me into setting up camp early, and it rained hard. Chatted with some section hikers and saw lots of thru hikers.
Tuesday, June 16
Weather: sunny, scattered showers
Miles travelled: 18.5
Total miles on AT: 1361.7
Pleasant, swampy morning walk. Andreas joined us around noon, back from Germany, and walked 7 miles to the shelter, where we chatted and drank the special German beer he brought us and accepted our 1.5 pounds of German Nutella.
Wednesday, June 17
Weather: sunny, fairly cool
Miles travelled: 19.1
Total miles on AT: 1380.8
Crossed into NY and had some rock scrambles. Had lunch at a hot dog stand with Click Clack and Six Strings, who is 18 years old and from Germany. I struggled and went to sleep without eating dinner because I was so tired.

I found a business card with trail angel information so I called and John picked us up. I eventually decided to take a zero with him so South Pole and Andreas did as well. His wife, Susan, attended Cornell, but she was out all day so I didn't get to meet her.
Major events:
- Massive hiker feed in Delaware Water Gap
- Crossed PA/NJ border
- Loved NJ (lots of wild blueberries, water, not as many rocks)
- Visited South Pole's relatives in NJ and took a wonderful zero day with them
- Andreas rejoined us, back from Germany
- Crossed NJ/NY border
- Found a business card with a trail angel's phone number, called him and he took us home with him. Unexpected incredible nero with lots of food, chickens, nice dogs, naps
