Day 7: Friday, May 27th
Marine City, MI -> Fenton, MI
Miles: 77-ish
Total miles: 505.45
Average speed: 12.1 mph
Weather: Sunny with moderate headwind
I woke up on my own at 6:45 and felt wonderful. I had slept incredibly well and fallen asleep early. I cleaned up and watched a bit of TV before leaving Nancy's beautiful haven.
I immediately noticed the difference between Canadian drivers and Michigan drivers. Michigan drivers are wild, impatient, and proud of their ownership of their roads! I was yelled at a couple times, and cars would speed up to get past me and leave me little to no space. I started the day incredibly happy but my mood was quashed quickly under the stress of staying alert.
About halfway through the day, I had been making good time when I got a flat tire. It was my rear tire, and I had a feeling it would happen soon because it hadn't been looking so great. I tried to pump it up but my teeny pump had given out on me and I wasn't getting anywhere. You'd think I would've checked that I had a decent pump before setting off!
I was sitting there pumping futilely when a car stopped a little down the road and a guy got out and ran down to where I was, asking if I needed help. What a godsend! We put my bike into his car and he asked me where I needed to go. His name was Aaron, and as we drove to his house he proceeded to tell me all kinds of things. He was so happy to talk to me about his wonderful girlfriend, who'd had this massive crush on him and then through a friend of a friend (or something), the word got to him and then he asked her out.
Louise, Aaron's girlfriend, was waiting for us at his house. As we attempted to fix my tire, they told me all about their churches and their faith and their schools. Turns out their bike pump didn't work, so we all drove down to a bike shop, where I had my spare tire put on. We had Taco Bell together afterwards, and we all giggled over Aaron's corny jokes. Finally, they left me on my way. It was so much fun to meet them and spend a little time with people close to my age!
The last half of my ride was pure torture. On top of the terrible drivers, the roads were terrible. They were narrow and potholed or flat-out gravel. I finally made it to my warmshowers host of the night in a horrible mood, but was instantly put at ease by Evelyn and Ken's friendly demeanors and adorable animals. They are newly married and live with Evelyn's son, Aiden (sp?). They were all so nice and we had a delicious dinner of chicken fajitas with all sorts of yummy things on top, and then dessert! Strawberry shortcake with vanilla ice cream. It was unbelievable.
Evelyn and Ken are a very interesting couple. I think Evelyn is more experienced with running and biking but Ken is beginning to try those sports as well. Evelyn was recently injured so she's been recovering and hasn't been able to run or ride, but Ken has been training for a 25k. They were telling me about how they met (and fell in love on their first date), and about their scuba diving adventures in the Bahamas (riding a powerful current).
They were so sweet and nice-- and now I have a beautiful soft bed to sleep in! What a day!
(Not many pictures because I was trying not to get smushed all day...)
