2000 miles and an excess of cycle tourists

Wednesday, June 18 (Day 33)

Distance: 0
Total: 1932 miles

Weather: sunny with a 20 mph tailwind

I decided to take the day off to recover from my fall and prepare to begin riding again, and Rick and Stacy generously allowed me to stay one more night, in spite of its being their son's 21st birthday!

It was a day of sleeping, petting their dog, and riding around town. I watched a movie in a theater and re-equipped myself with my second helmet and third mirror. It was painful to know I was missing such a great tailwind.

In the evening, another cycle tourist came to spend the night. His name is Duane. He is recently retired and started from Minneapolis, Minnesota on his way to Seattle and then down the coast.

Thursday, June 19 (Day 34)

Distance: 72 miles
Average speed: 11.9 mph
Max: 23.9 mph
Total: 2004 miles

Weather: Rain all morning, late afternoon sunshine and headwind

Duane and I set off at around 6:30, after hugs from Stacy and Rick. It was so great to stay with them, they are incredibly nice and welcoming.

Not long after we started riding, Michael (I met him at Donn Olsen's barn) caught up to us. We had very limited camping options so we could either ride 70 miles or 130 miles. We chose 70.

Again, I couldn't take many pictures because of the rain.

I picked up a package today!

We arrived at the campsite very early and just in time for the rain to stop.

A while after we arrived, two westbound cyclists rolled in and then two more! So there were seven of us at the campground.

I talked to one man, Lawrence, who was a breath of fresh air! He was riding about 50 miles per day and said he hadn't had a bad day yet. He didn't have a time limit for his trip and was just enjoying talking to people and taking his time. I thought he had a very nice perspective on touring.

We didn't have cell phone coverage at the campground but we could get some if we went up the hill.

As I was drifting off to sleep, I checked my bicycle computer and noticed that I had passed 2000 miles!
