Foiled again

Thursday, June 12 (Day 27)

Distance: 57.5 miles
Average speed: 10.2 mph
Max: 26.5 mph
Total: 1618 miles

Weather: overcast, 20-30 mph headwind all day

I set out with the ambitious plan once again to ride 100 miles. I thought, it'll be flat, my bike will be in good condition, it's time to beat my record.

Well, it didn't work that way. I woke up early to my tent being violently tousled by wind, and packed up quickly.

I didn't take many pictures because of my Grand Plan. I was on a time table, and I was beginning to wear myself out around noon as I worked furiously against the wind.

At about one in the afternoon, I realized I was exhausted. I decided my attempt was futile and began to search for the next nearest campground.

I thought I might also check warmshowers, just in case, and found someone very close to me. I gave them a tentative call, worried about such little notice, but was invited to come right over!

So I'm staying with Warren and Mary. Warren is a self employed civil engineer and Mary helps him. He had chosen to take the afternoon off of work and was polishing his car when I arrived. We talked quite a bit and he made lunch for us. They have an elderly cat who is very affectionate and has a warbled meow.

Later, Warren took me around town in his car and told me about it and we went for a couple short hikes.

Apparently, many years ago there was a glacier in northern Wisconsin. When it melted, it created some sort of fissure (I don't think I remember this properly) and the current of the water spun these huge boulders on top of even bigger boulders for many years, creating these large and very deep holes.

Somehow we were on the topic of money and Warren told me "You go to a party and the first thing someone asks you is what do you do, and not what do you think of humanity."

Great day, in spite of being foiled in yet another attempt at the ever-elusive century ride. One day it'll happen!
