San Francisco!

Sunday, June 27 (Day 72)

Distance: 74 miles
Average speed: 11.2 mph
Max speed: 35.2 mph
Total: 4230 miles

I'll update the actual numbers once I uncover my cycle computer from wherever it's been buried...

But I'm in San Francisco!

Before I left in the morning, three other sets of cyclists left the campground, but in the process of the morning I ended up passing all three.

As I approached the city, I started to see more roadies than I've ever seen in my life! Many of them slowed to chat for a couple minutes and congratulate me.

I rode mostly without stopping. I was so close!

Although I made exception for one final ice cream break-- organic nectarine ice cream, yum!

About 20 miles from the bridge, a cyclist named Nona told me to follow her and she'd show me where I need to go, and told me her story in the process. She said she wouldn't change a thing about her life, except maybe getting her degree. She works for the city of San Francisco in child services. She left me about 5 miles away from the bridge with a hug, and told me she was proud of me.

It was breathtaking excitement when I saw the Golden Gate Bridge at last!

My mom, step dad, and brother were waiting for me at the other end.

And then we went for dinner with Jenny.

But realized we hadn't gotten any pictures of me on my own with the bridge, so we went back and reassembled everything.

So ends this fantastic and unforgettable chaper of my adventure. It's surreal that it's over, and surreal that it ever happened. I wouldn't change a thing, and I'm so grateful to have met many incredible people along the way.

Thanks for reading! I'll be back soon, pursuing new and grand adventures. Maybe even instead of the Appalachian Trail, I will try my hand at the Pacific Creat Trail...

  3. Congratulations Natasha to your fantastic achievement! You look proud and confident on the picture with the bridge in the background for a good reason. You just cycled 4,000+ miles across the US. You have done this and there is nothing you cannot do from now onwards. I just recently finished reading "Wild" from Cheryl Strayed and I say YES do the PCT. For now - enjoy some lazy days!
